Microsoft USB CCID Driver Print E-mail
The USB Device Working Group has defined a class specification for smart card readers. This Device Class Specification for USB Chip/Smart Card Interface Devices (referred to as "USB CCID").

Over the past two years(2001-2003), the Windows USB Team has worked with various industry partners on the USB smart card class-driver project. This class driver reduces the need for hardware vendors to create a device-specific driver for smart card readers. Eliminating the need for a device-specific driver will potentially reduce the driver development cost, improve driver and system stability, reduce time to market, and lead to a simplified plug and play experience for customers using devices compliant with the USB Chip/Smart Card Interface Devices (CCID) Specification (revision 1.0 or later).

A generic USB class driver for CCID compliant devices is now available for the following operating systems:
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows XP
  • Windows Server 2003
The Microsoft Windows Division is developing a USB CCID class driver for its latest Windows operating systems, including Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, 2003. This class driver will reduce the need for end-users to install drivers for smart card readers. This generic Plug and Play solution for smart card customers will make attaching a smart card reader as easy as a USB keyboard or mouse. Gemplus and SCM are among others providing its own CCID-drivers to support all major operating system versions.
